Expectations

~~~~~~~~~~~~
How many times do we do things for other people and never get paid back. Do favors, loan money, a glass of milk, a cup of sugar. We sometimes give love without it being returned, many times if we have a good running war pony, sometimes somebody asks for a ride a few miles down the road. Says I will get your horse some hay or bucket of oats, payment but you never see the payment. You never get the love that you have given. A few beads or bones or feathers here and there are lost forever. We go over to another's lodge, check on their welfare, check because we have not seen them in two or three days. Check to see if they are still around or if their old house has been vacated but we sit around sometimes nothing to do, no place to go, nobody seems to care. Nobody gives us a ride on their war pony, nobody loans us a bone or a bead or a feather to make an ornament for our regalia. Nobody gives us a cup of sugar, glass of milk or a bag of coffee and says WaDo, thank you, for that time that you came to my aid. You even break down a door or crash through a window in a burning lodge to save someone's life, they might not even say WaDo, thank you. They might not even shake your hand maybe not even look at you with any appreciation, so why do these things. We do not do these things to make points with the Council. We do these things to satisfy our own need to help, to be of assistance, to come to the aid of someone hurting or in big time trouble maybe no wood to make a little fire to keep them warm in the winter or cook a little meal when they are hungry.
We give them some wood, we do all these things for all these other people and they just go on down the road, no thank you maybe they go around to all, everybody in the village and they borrow a little sugar here a little sugar there, come by your lodge to get some coffee, come by my lodge, you know this or that so they keep their kitchen all filled,
their cooking area, the pot, little meat here, little vegetable there, so what do we do. You bet, we keep doing what we been doing all the time without any expectations of a favor returned or maybe that potato or that cup of sugar, maybe a bowl of tobacco so somebody could share a smoke with a friend or with a relative from another village but what do we expect if we do things to expect in return if that is not done from the heart, not done from the Soul or Spirit. It is done from the gimme, give me back, be nice to me because I nice to you. Love me because I love you, not true love if just given back because they know you expect it. More honest way would be to say, you are wasting your time, go love somebody else, honest thing would be to say give me some sugar or give me coffee, give me a piece of meat for my pot because just gimme, not to borrow, loan me and if you expect something back don't go around offering.
You do not go around saying hey, if you need anything you give me a signal or you come over to my lodge, my lodge is your lodge. If you expect something back you better not say that because somebody might just take advantage and then if you have this expectation of, you know breaking even or maybe even making good trade or coming out ahead then you going to be very disappointed in life. This trading off, this giving, giving is exactly that, giving, not loaning, not I will trade you my love for your love, I will trade you a hug for a hug, I will trade you a handshake for that string of beads around your neck or that coyote bone or that hummingbird feather that fell down to earth at your feet. Sometimes we do trade if we know that person, that other human is that type of person, we say hey, let's make a good trade. I have this I'll trade you for that or what will you trade me for this or that. Don't have expectations because the next thing you know is going to be disappointment, big time disappointment. Like somebody in another lodge says come to dinner, come to breakfast, come over for a snack and you expect buffalo, deer or antelope and maybe you do not get any meat whatsoever maybe all vegetables. Expectations, disappointment so we are going to get a lesson from this disappointment.
We going to do things for our neighbor or someone across the mountain, someone in next village maybe someone in lodge right close by. We going to do this and not be disappointed. So how do you do something and not be disappointed, think about that one, no expectation huh. You loan a bone, a bead or a feather, you do not expect a cup of sugar, you help your neighbor bring in his horses or his cattle or his goats. You go round them up and he does not invite you for dinner or does not invite you for a cold drink, he does not even bother to say WaDo, thank you. No disappointment because no expectation, now the really, really good thing is that everybody will have no disappointment and no expectation so then we could do for others and not do unto others or underneath others or try to go over others, we break even, all break even. So we know someone that we say hey, we know that if I help this brother, you know blood of the blood, we help this brother put up his teepee, dress out his deer, not a selfish plan because this has worked out before, you have a big ole' bear or some fish that needs to be cleaned and you say hey, neighbor come, how about you come help me. I got all these fish and I have been out on the hunt or been out on the fish and I am very tired and I would really appreciate, now see you are not expecting anything. You say I would really appreciate your assistance but when you expect something, most times this individual is going to say, I got something to do, I got to be somewhere over at this other village or this other lodge in just a few short minutes so I do not have time, I do not want to get my hands or my clothes all stinky from fish or from skinning that bear.
So but you know good neighbor, good neighbor, been good neighbor long time you say hey, you don't say, you know if you help me this time I will help you next time. This is a known, known thing, you know because you have known for a long time and you help one another but no expectations so no disappointments. You expect the sun to come up in the morning, you might get big disappointment, you might not get to see it come up in the morning or maybe judgment day, no sun come up, do not expect, do not be disappointed, no disappointment, no expectations, one covers the other one pretty well, so you go to bed tonight and you lay down your Earthly Temple to rest your Soul and Spirit, you rest all the red ink inside this Earthly Temple which also contains your mind and your heart and the breathing capabilities to keep this Earthly Temple going from one sunrise to the next. You lay down that abode of flesh and bone, you lay down in that Earthly abode of sticks and stone which if you are in your house here on Earth, in your Earthly house, then it is a combination of all four, flesh and bone and sticks and stone. So you are laying everything down, you do not even expect to see the sun in the morning so when you wake up the next morning and Grandfather and the Council decide to give you another day here on Turtle Island, Mother Earth with all of nature and you wake up and you walk out and you look and you say ah, what a beautiful day even if it is snowing or even if it is cloudy but you know it is the beginning of another day, no disappointment because no expectation.
You expect too much, you say Grandfather put me on this Earth, Grandfather owes me something to eat, Grandfather owes me air to breath, water to drink, disappointment big time. You are going to be big time disappointed because you have got expectations. You think you are something special maybe you are something special, we all something special to Grandfather, the Great Spirit and the Sacred Council but we are one of many. We have food put upon this Earth that grows from the ground. We have the animal people, the bird people, the people of the water that sometimes give their life so we can have a belly full of food or we can pick a fruit or a berry from a vine that the Great Spirit implanted for our pleasure.
There are all sort of expectations, all sorts of disappointment so whatever you do, you do it from the depths of your Soul and Spirit. You do it from the heart, not the heart that pumps the blood, the nutrition for your Earthly abode, your Earthly Temple, the heart that pumps the red ink of truth and honesty to the Spirit. You do everything without expectation from the soul because you get disappointment, you get a whole, whole flood of salt tears. You do not expect and you get paid back or you get a reward then many sweet tears of happiness, happy, happy tears, thankful, thankful Soul and Spirit. Done a good job, been a good human, Grandfather is really proud of you. Chances are he is going to give you that other sunrise, that next beautiful sunset that looks like a big gold nugget sinking into the sea or in the crevice of a mountain or out on the desert, looks like a big round gold coin sinking into the sand. Do not expect it to come back the next day and there will be no disappointment so we do everything from the depths of our own caring, you do everything. We loan, we give, we maybe make good trade without disappointment. Walk with Grandfather, walk with the Great Spirit, walk and talk with the Sacred Council. Walk and talk with your brothers and sisters here on Turtle Island and everybody be happy.
