The Big Move To California
~~~~~~~~~~~
After the divorce from Elaine it was a time of thought, confusion and discontent. As there seemed no
happiness or future in Oklahoma and having that run from it feeling, I again struck out to find the end of the rainbow. I
decided to move to California, far away from all things that had hurt me in my past to a new and hopefully happy world. In
1963 I quit my job at Tinker Air Force Base and loaded my 1960 Pontiac Bonnaville with all my earthly possessions and trekked
toward the West in quest of my hopes and dreams, whatever they were. I went to work for Aero-Jet General in August as an electrical
technician working on research engines for NASA. The Gemini, Apollo, Transtage and Nerva rocket engines were part of that
program, in an attempt to reach the far corners of outer space. It was very interesting work and I enjoyed it with a satisfaction
that I had never known in any other job. This lasted only until October 1964 when I lost my job through a "Reduction In Force"
and had to obtain employment elsewhere. I applied and was accepted as a police officer at the University of California in
Davis approximately fourteen miles west of Sacramento. I had been working at the University for about a year or so when I
met a young lady by the name of Katherine(Kathy)Hawes, who had a daughter by a previous marriage. She lived with her parents
in the north edge of Davis and worked at W.T. Grants(a variety store with a restaurant). This place I patronized quite often
for lunch and that is how we met and eventually started going together. I had been waiting to go to work for The City of Sacramento
Police Department but they required that you live in the city in order to apply. In April 1966, the requirement was lifted
but you had to move within the city limits within a year of your appointment as a Police Officer. It was decided then to take
the test which I did and was accepted to start work in the Patrol Division in May 1966.
